Roughly fifty vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postal boxes were vandalized, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they announced in a release.
Officers report they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a man noticed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored fluid.
The substance had been applied in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they added.
Police then found multiple other vandalized cars and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws prohibiting the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement say early analysis show the liquid was most likely human blood.
"At present there remains no lead as to its origin; authorities are presently not cognizant of any injuries in relation with the event," they stated.
Local authorities announced they were attempting "to solve the case" and have requested to the residents for details.
A senior official stated the incident left him speechless and had to be addressed quickly.
"This event strikes at the core of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the right-wing terrorist attack five years ago," he stated on social media, mentioning the murder of nine victims by a shooter targeting residents of migrant background in 2020.
