Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Displacement Confirmed

The Philippines was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Officials reported that the powerful weather system caused widespread sudden floods, coastal inundation, landslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, prompting the relocation of 1.4 million people nationwide.

Extensive Damage and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams recorded floodwaters reaching the tops of houses and homes being swept away by strong flows.

“Our personnel rescued 14 individuals stranded on the roof surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official stated. “A father frantically contacted us, reporting the roof of his house was about to be ripped off by the wind. We saved him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, officials announced at least two deaths: one from drowning in Catanduanes and another killed when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The super typhoon was downgraded to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

Per the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is projected to continue weakening as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency stated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to accommodate 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit just days after another severe storm, which killed hundreds of lives and left another 135 missing before moving on toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for the missing persons had to be suspended recently over risks to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is causing tropical storms more intense and frequent. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to impact the nation in 2025.

Scientists report that the rate of intense cyclones striking the islands has risen doubled in the past twenty years.

International estimates indicate that severe weather events cause approximately millions in dollars in damage for the Philippines annually.

The Philippine president issued a state of emergency last week due to the severe damage caused by Kalmaegi and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
