Courtroom illustration Legal proceedings
Jon Ruben admitted 17 offences at Leicester Crown Court on Friday

A person who spiked treats with sleeping medication and provided them to children at a youth camp in the area has pleaded guilty to sexual crimes against two young males both nine and 10.

The accused was detained after eight children and one adult experienced illness at the facility in July.

The 76-year-old, from that region, confessed to a series of 17 offences when he stood at the judicial center on the end of the week.

However, he refused to admit one particular crime he was charged with, which was against a nine-year-old boy.

Ruben was held in detention prior to a further hearing on late November.

'Treat game'

Mary Prior KC, handling the case, outlined the criminal behavior to the judicial body.

She stated his victims were children from difficult backgrounds who were staying at a youth camp which he operated.

Ruben played a "candy game" with the minors, the legal counsel explained, in which he would access the boys' rooms when they were settling down and request they to consume candy "as quickly as they can".

She told the court Ruben had engaged in this activity with the children "repeatedly", and youngsters had earlier experienced illness the subsequent day.

She explained Ruben had been successful in rationalizing this over a long period as the youngsters being "overstimulated by activities", until his stepson had concerns in recently.

The legal representative added: "In the summer" his stepson had worries about the situation, justifiably.

"They resolved" to examine in the individual's items."

Mrs Prior KC said items including baby oil, ointment and medical needles were located, and his stepson alerted the law enforcement about his concerns.

She said the defendant went on to engage in the "candy game" with six youngsters that time - July 26th - and they were all sick the next day.

"Authorities" had not responded by that stage," she added.

The oversight body, the investigative body, previously told that it was reviewing Leicestershire Police's handling of the events.

The legal representative said the children were having difficulty walking due to being ill, so Ruben's stepson notified the authorities once more.

She stated Ruben then conducted the "candy game" in a space of five youngsters.
