Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.
The former head of state was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in September and handed more than 27 years in jail, but he was staying under confinement pending legal challenges.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" were revealed.
This encompassed trying to remove his ankle monitor and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a chance to flee".
Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns
In a document approving the custody, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his escape.
This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his son.
His child, his son Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.
The senator wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your sofa? I urge you to fight with us."
He said the demonstration would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the potential of Bolsonaro's "relocation to embassies near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a background of arranging to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a announcement said.
The court filing underscores that the United States embassy in the federal district, the capital city, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.
International Reactions
His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow populist conservative United States President President Trump, prompting him to enact a 50% tariff on imports of Brazilian goods.
He is being detained in a national police facility in the capital and will have a detention review on the next day.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with digital surveillance.
They also petitioned that he be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he required frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other ailments.

At the period, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.
